Published in 1909 by John Wesley Work, Jr., an African-American music scholar known for collecting the spiritual melodies of the Deep South, some of this gospel song's verses may actually date as far back as 1865... perhaps even farther.
Nothing is known about the original composition, as it was likely one of the many tunes sung by slaves as they were working in the fields, in order to keep their spirits up amidst a harsh climate of racist, dehumanizing dogma, physically degrading and emotionally exhausting torture, relentless fear and abject poverty.
Since its official inception, this song has been performed by many remarkable artists of colour and has come to be considered a beloved Christmas carol in the Black community.
We have come so far since then, and yet we have much farther to go.
We stand with our fellow children of God, as they struggle to improve race relations in a society that is inundated with unrelenting violence and stigma, and we honour the lives lost in the fight. Black Lives Matter.
lyrics
Go, tell it on the mountain
Over the hills and everywhere
Go, tell it on the mountain
That Jesus Christ is born
Go, tell it on the mountain
Over the hills and everywhere
Go, tell it on the mountain
That Jesus Christ is born
While shepherds kept their watching
O'er silent flocks by night
Behold throughout the heavens
There shone a holy light
Go, tell it on the mountain
Over the hills and everywhere
Go, tell it on the mountain
That Jesus Christ is born
The shepherds feared and trembled
When lo! above the Earth
Rang out the angel chorus
That hailed our Savior's birth
Go, tell it on the mountain
Over the hills and everywhere
Go, tell it on the mountain
That Jesus Christ is born
Down in a lowly manger
Our humble Christ was born
And God sent us salvation
That blessed Christmas morn
Go, tell it on the mountain
Over the hills and everywhere
Go, tell it on the mountain
That Jesus Christ is born
Go, tell it on the mountain
Over the hills and everywhere
Go, tell it on the mountain
That Jesus Christ is born
