With its composition dated all the way back to the 16th century, or perhaps even earlier, this song has the distinguished credit of being one of the world's oldest surviving carols. The song has had many interpreters since the first recorded music came into being, and it even was referenced in Charles Dickens' much-beloved 1843 novel "A Christmas Carol."

Lyrically, the song is grounded within the events described in the second chapter of the book of Luke... where there is the now well-known event of the lowly shepherds being informed by the heavenly host that a very special Child has been born.

Through its long history, this carol has long been a cherished classic Yuletide gem... and its rarefied status is unlikely to change anytime soon.
