Known as the "Cantique de Noël," this is one of the most famous songs in the world. The melody was originally composed in 1847 by Adolphe Adam as a setting to Placide Cappeau's poem "Minuit, chrétiens." It was later translated into English in 1855 by Unitarian minister John Sullivan Dwight, a staunch abolitionist, who preserved the imagery from the original French of slaves being liberated from the chains of oppression.
Today, the song is a proving ground for many female vocalists, who often try to belt out the refrain with as much verve as possible. But here, we took a different tack, honing on the sense of an exhausted and forlorn world looking to find a shred of hope amidst so much suffering... with the arrival of the Holy Child as a signal fire that all is not lost and things can get better than they have been before.
lyrics
O holy night! The stars are brightly shining
It is the night of the dear Saviour's birth
Long lay the world in sin and error pining
Till He appeared and the soul felt its worth
A thrill of hope, the weary world rejoices
For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn
Fall on your knees
O hear the angel voices
O night divine,
O night when Christ was born
O night divine
O holy night, O night Divine
Truly He taught us to love one another
His law is love and His gospel is peace
Chains shall He break, for the slave is our brother
And in His name, all oppression shall cease
Sweet hymns of joy in grateful chorus raise we
Let all within us praise His holy name
Christ is the Lord!
O praise His Name forever
His power and glory
Evermore proclaim
His power and glory
Evermore proclaim
