Written in 1732 by Italian bishop Alphonsus Liguori, the song is a lovely pastoral ode to the infant Jesus. Liguori led a pious life, eventually being canonized as a saint due to his many contributions to Catholic theology and philosophy, and for founding the Redemptionist missionary order. The song he gave to the world became a popular carol in Italy, and was later translated into English by many different parties.

The English lyrics we used here, however, come from two different places. The first English verse and chorus is featured in the 1963 music book "The International Book of Christmas Carols", curated by Walter Ehret and George K. Evans.

The even rarer translation we have of the second verse and chorus was given to Cindy by Rev. Joseph Pietropinto, and originated from an unknown source. Any attempts by us to locate the author and origin of these lyrics have failed abysmally.

Perhaps it shall remain a Christmas mystery. In any event, the deceptively simple song about the newborn Christ Child remains a beloved staple among Italian families at Christmas time.
