Written in 1857 by an Episcopalian clergyman, the song depicts the travel of the Magi to see the Christ Child. The story, however, is a frequent source of confusion for carolers. And it is high time that was cleared up, once and for all.
Even the songwriter misconstrued the three Magi as "kings" of the Orient. However, they were actually royal astrologers, searching for signs in the sky. Having found the strange star, they followed it until it stopped... above the infant himself, by then a toddler, as it would have taken many months to travel from the Far East to Israel.
But the story does not end there. The gifts they gave are in fact elements needed for the proper burial of a prince, suggesting they knew of the boy's eventual fate and demise. The first of the Magi, Gaspard, provides gold, so the future king can be interred with a symbol of his power. The second, Melchior, offers frankincense to remove the stench of decay. And finally, Balthazar offers myrrh to preserve the body.
These gruesome gifts to the infant remind us that, even in the midst of great joy, one must remember the inevitability of death. Memento mori.
lyrics
We three kings of Orient are
Bearing gifts we traverse afar
Field and fountain, moor and mountain
Following yonder star
Oh, star of wonder, star of light
Star with royal beauty bright
Westward leading, still proceeding
Guide us to Thy perfect light
Born a king on Bethlehem's plain
Gold I bring to crown him again
King forever, ceasing never
Over us all to reign
Oh, star of wonder, star of light
Star with royal beauty bright
Westward leading, still proceeding
Guide us to Thy perfect light
Frankincense to offer have I
Incense owns a Deity nigh
Prayer and praising, voices raising
Worshipping God on high
Oh, star of wonder, star of light
Star with royal beauty bright
Westward leading, still proceeding
Guide us to Thy perfect light
Myrrh is mine, its bitter perfume
Breathes a life of gathering gloom
Sorrowing, sighing, bleeding, dying
Sealed in a stone-cold tomb
Oh, star of wonder, star of light
Star with royal beauty bright
Westward leading, still proceeding
Guide us to Thy perfect light
Glorious now behold him arise
King and God and sacrifice
Hallelujah, hallelujah
Sounds through the earth and skies
Oh, star of wonder, star of light
Star with royal beauty bright
Westward leading, still proceeding
Guide us to Thy perfect light
