Father John Foley, a Jesuit priest, wrote "Winter Cold Night" for the St. Louis Jesuits' 1977 album Gentle Night. Inspired by the tradition of lullabies that invoke various misfortunes while also uttering "lulling" words to soothe a sleepy child, this song was the finale of that collection of recordings.
Here, we've taken the now classic Catholic song and modernised it for a new age, one that can often feel cold and lonely in the physical separations between friends and family that can often only be bridged online. A world that leaves young children extremely vulnerable to use and abuse by an often cruel and uncaring world.
But nonetheless, there is always hope. As a child born in a rough stable in the midst of abject poverty can rise to become the most lauded voice of the western world, so the children living now can rise above... So long as mothers continue to love and shelter their babes against the dark wintry nights that try the human soul.
lyrics
Dark, dark the winter cold night, lu-lee-lay
Hope is hard to come by, lu-lee-lay
Hard, hard the journey tonight, lu-lee-lay
Star guide, hope hide
Our poor winter cold night
And on Earth, peace
Good will among men
Lean, lean, the livin' tonight, lu-lee-lay
Star seems darker sometimes, lu- lee-lay
Unto you is born this day
A Saviour
Pain, yes, in the bornin' tonight, lu-lee-lay
Star guide, hope hide
Our poor winter cold night
